Daniel Plan 1/16/17: Eat Food the Way God Made It!

Welcome to the Daniel Plan with Well Within.

I have taught this course several times at different churches and am excited to try doing it in this forum. The source book for this material is “The Daniel Plan” by Rick Warren, Daniel Amen M.D. and Mark Hyman M.D..

My goal is to participate in the program with you and give some tips and insights along the way. I encourage all who participate to get the book as we will be using it extensively and the material is more in depth than I can relay.

Let’s start with a foundational principle regarding food, I quote from the book:

Food can reinvigorate your health, reconnect families, restore vibrant communities, improve the economy, improve the health of the environment, reduce pollution, and even help our kids get better grades and avoid eating disorders, obesity and drug abuse.
How many of us have ever considered that food can heal? This is the biggest scientific discovery since the germ theory of disease and antibiotics: food is medicine. Food is the most powerful drug on the planet. It can improve the expression of thousands of genes, balance dozens of hormones and optimize tens of thousands of protein networks. It can cure most chronic diseases, and it works faster, better and cheaper than any drug – and all the side effects are good ones.
Food contains messages, instructions, and information that tell your body what to do every moment to increase vitality or create disease. Every bit you take is a powerful opportunity to create healing or infirmity. Real, whole food that comes from the earth – food that was created by God – heals, while industrial-processed food created in factories by man harms.
— The Daniel Plan: 40 Days to a Healthier Life

So there it is, principle number one: Eat food the way God made it!!!!

I want to introduce the concept of the Daniel Plan plate. If you divide your plate into four quadrants, one quadrant would be protein, ideally eggs or fish or lean meat. One quadrant would be a complex starch, such as brown rice or sweet potato or peas. The other two quadrants would be vegetables such as spinach, zucchini, onions, green beans, mushrooms, kale, broccoli, cauliflower, salad etc.

More tomorrow, good luck and let me know what you think and suggest any improvements.

Daniel Plan 2017

Join your friends at Well Within for a lean (but not mean) 2017!

As we enter the new year, I find myself 20 pounds over my goal weight and I have decided to implement an accountability circle based on the Daniel Plan. I will be blogging my journey on the website and I encourage all who are interested to follow along and join in.

The Daniel Plan is built on five pillars: faith, food, fitness, focus and family. Faith is the foundation with God as the source of the power and the energy behind all transformational change. Let's explore together how we can honor God through these bodies He has graciously loaned us.

New Year, New You!

Lose weight. Exercise more. Eat healthier. Finish that book. Quit smoking. Stop procrastinating. Travel more. Learn a new language. Sleep better.

It can be intimidating when your list of new year's resolutions is longer than your Christmas card list. And that's before the stress and anxiety of missing one or two gym visits, procrastinating on that work project, or cheating with a cheeseburger, kicks in.

According to the American Psychological Association, however, it is important to remember that the January 1st isn’t meant to serve as the D-Day for massive changes. It is a time for people to reflect on the previous year’s behavior and promise to make lifestyle changes that push them in a positive direction.

“Setting small, attainable goals throughout the year, instead of a singular, overwhelming goal on January 1st can help you reach whatever it is you strive for,” says psychologist Lynn Bufka, PhD. “Remember, it is not the extent of the change that matters, but rather the act of recognizing that lifestyle change is important and working toward it, one step at a time.”

By making your resolutions simpler and more realistic, there is a greater chance that you will keep them throughout the year, incorporating healthy behavior into your everyday life.

Here's to a simpler, realistic, healthier new year...and new you!

In that spirit, we're pleased to announce our New Year's Rejuvenation Specials!

We're kicking off 2017 with a trio of incredible offerings for new patients:

1) Wellness Evaluation ($50...normally $180)

An initial visit with Dr. Sonja and Noel, during which they will perform several tests to give them an idea of what kind of health you're in. The tests include Heart Rate Variability, Nutrition Reflex Testing, Acupressure Stress Elimination Assessment, Body Fat Analysis, and a complete medical history. Included in the NIV is a second appointment where they will provide you the results of your testing and let you know if you're a candidate for the health improvement programs they offer.

2) Acupressure Stress Elimination Evaluation and Treatment ($50...normally $120)

Acupressure Stress Elimination, also known as ASE is a way of cleaning up endocrine disruptors so the body's own hormones have the potential to work normally again. ASE doesn't use hormones or medications as treatment, but is a technique to tape into the endocrine system through neurological reflex points with the intention of bringing communication back into the system.

3) Essential Nutrients Check ($50...normally $120)

ENC is for patients who are well, without symptoms, and who want to know what specific nutrients they need to stay well and prevent future health issues. Includes a full Clinical Nutrition Analysis to make sure there are not hidden weaknesses or deficiencies that have not yet become symptomatic. Includes a summary of findings and recommendations. Includes a follow-up check in 60 days to make certain the recommendations have been effective and whether they are still needed.

**Specials are honored through Jan 31, 2017 and are for new patient services only.**
