Daniel Plan 2/21/17: Run in Such a Way as to Get the Prize

Good morning, and a belated Happy President's Day!

I was recently reading a commentary on Hebrews, about running the race set before us, and this really struck me:

A Race that All must Run.

Let us run with patience the race that is set before us.

Life is a race: an individual effort, not a fatality. Every man is what his life is; and his life is just how he has run his race. The road is his; the opportunity is his; the means and appliances are his; and if he fails, the fault is his. To all alike God gives the race, and gives to each the properties for success. Men are differently constituted and gifted, but all have gifts and talents committed to them whereby to run the race of life. To be humble as this world goes is no test of the capacities with which a man is qualified for running the race.

The coarsest reed that trembles in the marsh, if Heaven select it for its instrument, may shed celestial music on the breeze as clearly as the pipe of virgin gold.

What do we see in a race? Muscles strained; veins like whipcords; beaded perspiration; strenuous, intense, earnest speed. The reality in the mental and spiritual man corresponding to these symbols in the physical man—that is our aim. The figure of the Olympian athlete means a life in earnest or it means nothing. Useful service in life, or duty well done—that is our goal. Temptation met and resisted and conquered—that is our goal. Power to love, to be just, to be pure, to be true, to control external life and internal life—that is our goal. Honest success in the vocation of life which we follow—that is our goal.

The success of the Christian lawyer, of the Christian business man, of the Christian artificer, of the Christian scholar, is just so much power added to the personality which he consecrates to the cause of God and to the uplifting of humanity in the world. We should therefore look upon success in our daily vocation as a duty which we owe to God and man.

We should push our business or our study, or our practice, or our manual toil until it has become a success. To reach success in every case will take hard work; but to do hard and healthful work is the purpose of God in bringing us into the world. Hard work has always been the condition of success in all the departments of life.

No man ever became a Bunsen or a Faraday in the laboratory apart from endless experimenting with chemicals. No man or woman ever went up the way of the violin, or the way of the piano, or the way of the organ, or the way of the orchestra, except by labour. The Beethovens, the Mendelssohns, the Mozarts, the Haydns, and the Handels, who cheer human life with their sweetness of music, were all incarnated energy and ambition and push.

We seldom want to exercise, It is hard to get motivated and we're all BUSY. The point is, you have to schedule your exercise or it isn't going to happen consistently! We have a prize waiting for us at the end: a body that functions better, lungs that get more oxygen, muscles that support us better, a heart that pumps better and cells that are nourished and flushed.

Today's Bible verse:

Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize.
— 1 Corinthians 9:"24

Daniel Plan 2/20/17: The Divine Designer

Hi all!

Welcome back, after a brief hiatus.

I wrote a message on Thursday and it got lost in cyberspace. On Friday I was tied up all day and never got a message written. I apologize for the interruption.

Today we are moving on to the fitness portion of the Daniel Plan.

First, I want to start with a small lesson on cells. Hold all applause and jubilant praise.

Cells are the foundation of all organisms. They are the fundamental unit of life. They are a living unit and have the same needs that we, as an organism, do. Our bodies consist of trillions of cells that are differentiated into different organs. If you were to look into a cell you would see a microscopic, functioning little city complete with a control center, transport mechanisms, generator plant, waste disposal system, reproductive mechanism, protein and fat synthesis centers.

On a basic level, the cell needs food, water and oxygen. It also needs to eliminate carbon dioxide and waste products. That process takes place through the cell walls and into the bloodstream for the most part, some goes into the interstitial (between cell) spaces and is transported away by the lymphatic system, which ultimately is dumped into the bloodstream. The exchange of oxygen and nutrients and waste products and carbon dioxide takes place at the capillary level of the circulatory system.

Cells form tissues which form organs which function together to form the organism, YOU.

I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful,  I know that full well.
— Psalms 139:14

I have been studying the body for over 40 years and I find it impossible to observe the workings of a single cell and not see a divine designer behind it.

What does this have to do with fitness?, you might ask. Well, you have to understand the foundation if you are going to build a structure. We have to nourish and encourage our cells through our work out endeavors and our food choices.

Today's Bible verse:

Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ. For we were all baptized by one Spirit so as to form one body—whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free—and we were all given the one Spirit to drink.  Even so the body is not made up of one part but of many.
— 1 Corinthians 12:12-14

Daniel Plan 2/15/17: God Will Supply the Power You Need

Good day to all!

Thanks for all the feedback about your successes and struggles. We all share them. The journey is almost never a straight one, and includes a number of course corrections along the way. Hang in there and remember that if you don't quit, you won't lose!

Today, I am going to rely extensively on the end of the Daniel Plan chapter on faith, because I think it articulates very well the thoughts I am trying to convey:

"We want you to remember a very important truth: God is not waiting for you to get physically healthy or spiritually mature before he starts loving you. He loves you right now, and he will be cheering you on at every stage of your growth and development. He is not waiting for you to cross the finish line first. He is smiling at you as you run the race.

You might be thinking, But what if I happen to stumble or fall in the race? God will still love you. Imagine this scene: If parents are watching their child run a race at school and the child stumbles and falls, what do loving parents do? They cheer even more loudly. They don't criticize or belittle the child. They yell, "I know you can do it! Get up! I believe in you! Don't be discouraged! It's just a minor setback! Keep going! I know you can make it to the finish line!"

That is what God is saying to you right now. "I'm proud of you for trying, and I'm going to be helping you. I will supply the power you need if you will spend time with me reading my Word every day, if you will depend on my Spirit inside you every moment, and if you will trust me to use every circumstance in your life for you good and growth."

So this is your moment to grasp God's love and power. The moment you get a clearer view and stronger foundation of faith. The moment when God starts to change you from the inside out."

-Daniel Plan: 40 Days to a Healthier Life

Today (and every day's) Bible verse:

What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?
— Romans 8:31

Peace and Blessings!

Daniel Plan 2/14/17: "Be Anxious for Nothing"

Hi to all out there!

Thanks for taking the time to read these thoughts about how to live a healthier, more productive and well rounded life.

In John, Jesus says:

The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.
— John 10:10

That's what we're trying to encourage here...a life led more abundantly within the system that the Lord has provided for us. The thief wants to steal our joy. He wants us to be discouraged and feel lost and hopeless. I can tell you today, that there is hope! Our challenges may be big, but our God is bigger!

Philippians tells us:

Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
— Philippians 4:6-7

There are some verses in the Bible that just seem to stay with me and this is one of them. How I long to be "anxious for nothing!" Yet I can say, in complete honesty, that I am anxious a lot less because of trusting in these verses and applying them to my life. It all stems from having a relationship with Jesus.

Relationships have to be cultivated and grown and they develop from ongoing communication among the parties involved. If you want to have a meaningful relationship with Jesus you need to spend time praying and studying His word.

The Gospel of John is a great starting place. John describes himself as the disciple Jesus loved, and this is the perspective from which he writes. It is the most personal of the Gospels and gives the most clear cut picture of Jesus as both God and man.

Today's Bible verse:

I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing.
— John 15:5

Thank you Lord for the opportunity to abide in you. May it be our priority in life!

Until tomorrow, healthy blessings.

Daniel Plan 2/13/17: Keep Asking and Trusting

Hello to all!

I hope you had a great weekend. Just a quick thought on eating out. Today I went to my new favorite Mexican Restaurant beachside, Fiesta Jalisco. For those of you who are locals, it's in front of the Lowes plaza in Indian Harbor Beach. I ordered lunch fajitas and had them substitute Mexican coleslaw for the beans and rice. Not only was it in line with the Daniel Plan plate, but it was so so good. Try them out if you get a chance.

I wanted to talk some more about prayer and the power of faith. There is a prayer suggested in the book and when I teach this class live I start each session with it, so here it is:

Dear God, thank you for creating me and loving me so that I can have a relationship with you. Thank you for understanding the frustration I have felt in failing to change things in myself that need changing. I realize that without your help I am powerless to change my deepest habits, hurts, and hang-ups. I need a Savior and I thank you for sending Jesus to die on the cross for me.

Jesus, I need your presence, your power and your purpose in my life. I want to turn from my plans to your plan, and from depending on my power to your power. From now on, I want you to be the Lord and manager of my life. In faith, I humbly ask you to forgive my sins and my failures and help me to become what you intended for me to be. For the rest of my life, I want to get to know you better so I can trust you more.

I pray this in your name. Amen.
— The Daniel Plan: 40 Days to a Healthier Life

Where does faith come from? From knowing the Word of God and respecting His power to transform us. The Bible tells us:

Faith comes by hearing the message and the message is heard through the word of Christ.
— Romans 10:17

So we need to know what the words of Christ are.

When Jesus had entered Capernaum, a centurion came to him, asking for help. “Lord,” he said “my servant lies at home paralyzed and in terrible suffering.” Jesus said to him “I will go and heal him.” The centurion replied “Lord, I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. But just say the word and my servant will be healed. For I, myself, am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one “go” and he goes, and that one “come” and he comes. I say to my servant “do this” and he does it.” When Jesus heard this, he was astonished and said tho those following him, “I tell you the truth, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith.” Then Jesus said to the centurion, “Go! It will be done just as you believed it would.” And his servant was healed at that very hour.
— Matthew 8:5-10,13

The faith of the centurion is that of one who knows what it is like to be an earthly authority and to have his commands carried out. He gave himself in to Jesus heavenly authority and saw the miracle.

Keep asking and trusting. Be blessed

Today's Bible verse:

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.
— Romans 8:28
